Abstract

This study uses the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. This study was conducted because of the low initial reading ability of class I students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Bustanul Ulum 1 Curahkalong, Bangsalsari District, Jember Regency. Of the 25 students who obtained the low category, there were 15 students (31.91%), the medium category was 7 students (14.89%) and the high category was 3 students (6.38%). The purpose of this study was to improve the reading ability of class I students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Bustanul Ulum 1 Curahkalong by applying the picture and picture model. The results of the initial data study showed that students in the low category were 15 students (31.91%), students in the medium category were 7 students (14.89%) and students in the high category were 3 students (6.38%) in the low category. In cycle I, students' reading ability increased. There are 12 students in the low category (25.53%), 4 students in the medium category (8.51%) and 9 students in the high category (19.14%) in the low category. In cycle II, there was an increase in students' reading ability. Students in the low category decreased to 5 students (10.63%), students in the medium category increased to 6 students (12.76%) and those in the high category also increased to 14 students (29.78%) in the medium category.
