Abstract

This article examines the development of Islamic thought in Southeast Asia through the ideas of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, Abdurrahman Wahid, Azyumardi Azra, and M. Amin Abdullah. It analyzes their contributions in addressing modernity, pluralism, Islamic education, and knowledge development. This study employs library research with a descriptive-analytical approach using books, journal articles, and the scholars’ works as data sources. The findings show that Islam in Southeast Asia developed through peaceful processes involving trade, marriage, Sufism, education, arts, and politics, producing a moderate and culturally accommodative tradition. Al-Attas emphasized the Islamization of knowledge and adab-based education to counter secularization. Abdurrahman Wahid promoted pluralism and the indigenization of Islam, presenting Islam as inclusive and tolerant. Azyumardi Azra contributed through the modernization of Islamic education and the concept of the Nusantara ulama network, highlighting the region’s intellectual tradition. M. Amin Abdullah proposed the integration-interconnection of religious and general sciences to overcome the dichotomy of knowledge. Despite their different intellectual orientations, these scholars shared a commitment to reconstructing Islamic thought while preserving its normative foundations. The study concludes that Islamic thought in Southeast Asia has produced a paradigm integrating Islamic tradition, local context, and modern demands, resulting in a moderate, inclusive, and integrative model of Islam.
