Abstract

This study aims to analyze Generation Z students' understanding of dress ethics from the perspective of Surah An-Nur verse 31 using Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab as the primary analytical framework. The novelty of this study lies in its examination of the gap between Generation Z students’ religious understanding and their dressing practices amid the influence of digital culture and contemporary fashion trends. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three Generation Z university students selected purposively and were analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Generation Z students’ understanding of dress ethics remains predominantly normative, focusing on the obligation to cover the aurat, and has not fully encompassed the moral, social, and spiritual dimensions emphasized in Tafsir Al-Mishbah. This finding is reflected in the participants’ tendency to interpret clothing primarily as a means of covering the aurat rather than as an expression of modesty, dignity, and moral responsibility as outlined in Surah An-Nur verse 31. Furthermore, the participants’ dressing practices were influenced by social media, fashion trends, and their social environment, creating a discrepancy between religious understanding and its practical implementation. Tafsir Al-Mishbah emphasizes that dress ethics are not merely concerned with covering the aurat but also with preserving the identity, dignity, and morality of Muslim women. This study highlights the relationship between Generation Z students’ religious understanding and the influence of digital culture in shaping their perceptions and practices of dress ethics.
