Global ecological crises, such as deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss, demand responses that integrate science, public policy, and religious values. In Islam, the hadith encouraging tree planting—particularly as narrated by al-Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad, Ahmad, and Abu Dawud—provides an important foundation for Islamic eco-theology. This study examines the spiritual and ecological values embedded in this hadith through an analysis of its isnad, matn, and their relevance to contemporary ecological findings. Employing a qualitative library research approach, the study uses content analysis alongside isnad and matn criticism, drawing on classical hadith collections, commentaries, and modern ecological literature. The findings indicate that the hadith is authenticated as sahih, as all of its transmitters are regarded as thiqah (trustworthy). Its matn emphasises optimism, diligence, intergenerational benefit, and the enduring reward of ṣadaqah jariyah (continuous charity). Ecologically, the hadith aligns with contemporary scientific understanding of the role of plants in oxygen production, water conservation, erosion control, food provision, soil enrichment through composting, biodiversity conservation, and the sustainable use of timber. It integrates spiritual, social, ecological, and economic dimensions into a coherent framework. The study concludes that the exhortation to plant is not merely an individual act of worship but an intergenerational investment linking piety, human well-being, and environmental sustainability. The study's novelty lies in its focused examination of the hadith encouraging planting even when the Day of Judgement is imminent and in its dialogue with contemporary ecological scholarship.
